Learn English with the news — then speak about it
Liningo is a free English-learning app for iOS and Android that rewrites two news stories every day at three levels — Easier, Normal and Challenge. You read and listen to the story at your level, learn its words, and then talk about the same story with another learner at your level in a guided 7-minute voice call.
Most "learn English with the news" resources stop at reading and listening. That builds understanding, but it doesn't build speaking. Liningo is built around the step that's usually missing: using the story's words out loud, with a real person, the same day.
Why the news works for learning English
- Real topics. You learn the English people actually use to talk about the world — not "the pen is on the table."
- Built-in repetition. News comes back to the same themes, so the same useful words appear again and again.
- Something to say. A story you read this morning is a ready-made conversation topic. That's the hardest part of speaking practice, solved.
- A fixed daily habit. There's a new story every day, so there's always a next step.
The catch: native news is often too hard. If you look up every third word, you stop reading. That's why each Liningo story is written at three levels, so you can read the same news at the difficulty that fits you today.
A 15-minute daily routine
- Open today's story at your level. Easier, Normal or Challenge — Liningo uses the level in your profile.
- Read and listen. Read the story, then play the audio recap to hear how the words sound.
- Learn the words in context. Tap the words you don't know and save the useful ones. Answer a few short questions to check you understood.
- Write, with AI feedback. Answer a writing prompt about the story. The AI shows you a smoother, corrected version and asks a follow-up question — practice before you say it out loud.
- Speak about it. Join a 7-minute voice call with another learner at your level who read the same story. A guided call board takes you through a warm-up, a vocab game, the topic and a social bridge.
Reading, listening and writing come first on purpose. By the time you speak, the topic and the words are already in your head.
Which level should you choose?
Here is the same sentence at all three levels:
Liningo shows you the version that matches the English level in your profile. Set it where you understand most of a story without a dictionary but still meet a few new words, and move it up when the stories start to feel easy. With Premium you can also switch between the three versions on any story.
Liningo vs. reading-only news sites
Free resources like News in Levels, VOA Learning English and BBC Learning English are excellent for reading and listening practice, and many learners use them every day.
The difference is what happens after you read. Liningo adds a speaking step: a short, structured call about the story with someone at your level. If your problem is "I understand English but I freeze when I speak," that's the part you need. See the full comparison with other English apps.
